The 7-Year Itch

It was 7 years ago today I walked away from the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).

I always wanted to start a company that helps organizations and people tell their stories more effectively. So, with the support of my wife and business partner, Angie — we finally decided to pull the trigger and see if we could make a go of it.

Today, after lots of hard work, we have wrapped up our 7th year in business.

This past year we’ve even developed a bit of an itch to grow and expand. So, we’ve moved into the tech hub that is Kitchener-Waterloo — a move we are very excited about — one that brings us closer to our base and clients in the Toronto area. And, we’ve also started working with a number of very talented and experienced associates.

We are both also very proud of the level of financial contributions and pro bono work we provide to charities and non-for-profits. As both a personal and corporate value, we believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work.

Anyone who runs their own business knows it’s not easy.

If you’re doing it right, you’re always on. There’s no 4 weeks of paid holidays. There are lots of late nights, working weekends and tearing through proposals and projects while your friends are at the lake or ball game on a hot summer day.

And, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We have the freedom to succeed and the freedom to fail. We eat what we kill, as they say — and there’s something very exhilarating and liberating about that — and it can also be scary as Hell.

So, as we celebrate the beginning of our 8th year, we want to let you know we could not have had this success without the support of our families, our friends and — of course — you, our clients, who have trusted us with your reputations over the years. This is a trust that we don’t take lightly — and one we appreciate more than you’ll ever know.

Thank you.
